           QLawn Turf

Can turf be laid at any time of the year?
Yes, the only time when it is not possible is when the ground is frozen.

I have seen turf advertised locally which is cheaper. Why is that?
Be careful when phoning round for quotes, be sure to get a comparative price, which is for a m. Some non-TGA growers still supply turf by the yd , which is 20% smaller than a m. Some suppliers will be offering ‘meadow turf' which is generally a vastly inferior product. Buying QLawn turf, you are assured of a high quality product grown to a recognised standard and one that represents good value for money.

What is TGA?
It is a group of turf growers who share ideas about turf production, however Q Lawns are one of only a few members who grow to the TGA Quality Standard.

What size are QLawn rolls of turf and how thick is it cut?
The turf is 610mm wide, 1640mm long and covers 1m . As a rule of thumb, when preparing for turf, rake the soil level with the surface you are matching up to. This will allow for the soil to settle and the turf will be flush… easier for mowing!

What type of soil is QLawn turf grown on?
QLawn turf is grown on the rich lowlands  in Norfolk on the Fens. The very dark, organic, stone free soil gives the turf a good start and when harvested the resulting root structure is very strong; essential for giving the turf its handling strength.

Does the soil type from a grower need to be the same as my own?
Not at all, turf is a mat of living grass plants; the soil is only the carrier in the same way as soil from a pot plant is. The resulting lawn will take on the characteristics of the soil in your garden. It may be that if your soil is poor, then you will need to feed it more often. This applies whichever turf you lay.

What is QLawn grade?
It is a Ryegrass and Fescue mix, which is ideal for most applications.

Is QLawn grade hardwearing?
Yes, it also has smooth stalk grasses, which give the lawn an element of self-repair.

Can QLawn be used in the shade?
Be careful here, plants need sunshine to photosynthesise, it depends on how much shade you have. To see if grass will grow in your shady area, only buy one or two square metres of turf and try it before you buy enough to do the whole garden.

What if turf doesn't grow in the shade?
We suggest you purchase grass seed containing woodland grasses like Tufted hairgrass or use RTF seedWhat other type of turf is available?

Please ask if you require a specific turf type

What is Bowling Green turf?
What the trade call a fescue bent mix - is used for bowling and putting greens. It requires a high input of management and not commonly used for domestic lawns. It is not available from Q Lawns in the Midlands

Is QLawn turf guaranteed?
No, due to the variables that can happen to a living product from when it is delivered to you. However if things go wrong and we are notified early of a problem , we will aim to offer advice where appropriate.

What can go wrong?
Grass is quite difficult to kill, once the turf has rooted, it is then a lawn, responsibility back to the grower would be difficult to establish. You must remember that when turf is harvested, most of its root system is chopped off; it is also rolled up and deprived of daylight. Turf in this state, starved of its vital life support system, soon becomes stressed and is prone to ill health. Most problems stem from leaving turf rolled up too long or not giving the new lawn enough water in the first two weeks. Happily though 99.9% of turf establishes into lawns to be proud of.

Do I need to lay the turf straight away?
Most certainly YES, failure to lay and water turf immediately will result in the turf going yellow, putting un-necessary stress on the plant.

How much water do I need?
Depends on your garden size, turf must be kept moist, but not saturated, any signs of shrinkage, water immediately. We advise using hosepipe and an oscillating sprinkler to apply water. If you are considering a using a watering can, think again. Obviously turf laid in autumn, winter and early spring will generally be far easier to manage with natural rainfall.

How much does water cost?
To apply 25mm (1 inch) of water to a 100 square metre newly laid lawn you need 2.5m 3 of water – this will cost around £2.22 based in 1m costing 89p

          Enviromat

What is the best time of year to install Enviromat?
Enviromat call be installed at any time of year and in any weather except frost and snow. Points to bear in mind though to get the best out of your Enviromat are:

  • If you are buying in rolls, they must be unfurled within 8 hours of delivery (sooner in hot weather!) otherwise the plants will start to die.
  • For the plants to settle themselves properly in their new home, Enviromat will need to be watered every day for at least 2 weeks after installation. In high summer, they will probably appreciate being watered twice a day.
  • Enviromat is mown on the production fields to speed up growth and to minimise damage to the plants when they are in transit. You will increase the chances of your Enviromat flowering in its first season if you install it in September/October, let it overwinter and then apply a slow-release fertilizer in late March or early April.

Can I Walk on my Enviromat?
You can walk on Enviromat, but only very occasionally. It certainly won't stand up to a game of football or a garden party. If you are considering using Enviromat as groundcover, perhaps as an ornamental “lawn”, including stepping stones or a path in your design will help save wear and tear on the plants.

Will Enviromat grow in the shade?
Unfortunately, no. Sedum plants are specially adapted to live in exposed sites – mountainsides, moors, seashores etc; to avoid losing water from their leaves, they have developed a biological system for themselves that we call CAM (Crassulacean Acidic Metabolism). For CAM to work properly the plants need to feel a distinctive temperature difference between night and day – that doesn't happen in the shade and so the plants struggle to survive.

Can I use Enviromat indoors?
Enviromat is a super way of making an unusual centre piece for the dinner table, a Christmas wreath or a living sculpture but it will only be happy indoors for very short periods of time – three to four days at the most. After that the plants begin to get pale and “leggy”.

Is Enviromat affected by Frost?
All of the sedum species in Enviromat are frost hardy in the British Isles ; Quite often frost will stimulate the leaves to take on an attractive burgundy red colour – another aspect to Enviromat's all year round interest, and a white haw frost accentuates the different shapes, sizes and textures of the leaves and looks absolutely delightful.

Is Enviromat suitable for seaside gardens?
Enviromat certainly seems to tolerate the salty air at the seaside and it doesn't mind being in exposed situations so yes, Enviromat sedum matting is suitable for a seaside garden,

Are Sedum Plants Poisonous?
No, sedums are totally non-toxic; in fact our ancestors often used sedums to make medicines. The leaves and stems of sedum plants taste bitter too, so there's no need to worry about children or animals eating them, they're just not appetizing enough!

           NutriFusion Lawn Food

What is NutriFusion Balanced Lawn Food?
Nutrifusion is an easy to use granular soil and plant food, which provides a balanced diet for all every type of lawn, whatever age it may be and whatever the soil type. Not only does it feed the grass plants themselves but it cares for the microscopic soil dwelling creatures that help to keep our planet healthy.

There are three kinds of Nutrifusion:

  • Pre-Turfing Fertiliser: To help your Q Lawns turf to put down roots, establish speedily and grow on to become a strong, healthy lawn
  • Spring and Summer Lawn Feed: For use on established lawns, Nutrifusion Spring and Summer Lawn Feed contains all the nutrients your lawn needs while the roots and leaves are growing fast. Applying Nutrifusion Spring and Summer Lawn Feed every 6-8 weeks during the growing season as part of your lawncare programme, will help your lawn recover from the wear and tear of everyday use, resist drought and disease, and generally be something to be proud of.
  • Autumn and Winter Feed: Low in Nitrogen but high in phosphates, Nutrifusion Autumn and Winter Feed helps the plants to build the strong and healthy roots, which will encourage healthy growth through the spring and summer.

Why is NutriFusion so Good?
NutriFusion contains essential plant nutrients combined with organic carbon and natural growth promoters. NutriFusion contains no man-made chemicals and is specially formulated to be kind to the environment as well as to your lawn.

Nutrifusion contains Organic Carbon - What is ‘Organic Carbon'?
You can't see them, but Carbon molecules are everywhere. They can be found in some rocks, such as limestone and are an important part of everything that is, or ever has been alive. In fact carbon molecules make up around 20% by weight of the human body. The Organic Carbon used to create NutriFusion Lawn Feed, comes from ancient life forms that have long since died, decayed, and been returned to the earth

My Usual Lawn Feed contains mainly Phosphorus, Potassium and Nitrogen (P,K,N) Why does NutriFusion contain Organic Carbon as well?
Carbon molecules are an important part of the energy foods – carbohydrates. Carbon gives energy to the microscopic creatures that live in the soil and a healthy population of beneficial microbes soil results in strong, healthy plants.

Is NutriFusion Eco-Friendly?
Most Definitely! When applied correctly, NutriFusion will actually reduce the amount of soil nutrients that the rain can wash away into rivers and streams, (this is called leaching and can eventually kill freshwater fish).

Does NutriFusion have any health warnings?
Just like any other product for the garden, NutriFusion should be kept away from Children and Animals and stored in a labeled container. Always wash your hands after use and wear gloves when handling it.

Does NutriFusion Contain any Harmful Chemicals?
No it doesn't, and if it is correctly stored, applied carefully and used for what it was intended – a garden fertiliser – it is perfectly harmless.

Does Nutrifusion Contain Growth Hormones Or Other Unwanted Organic Compounds?
There are certainly no “nasties” in NutriFusion. The only plant hormones in NutriFusion are naturally occurring and will help your lawn to stay strong and healthy – there's no danger of them producing Triffids or changing the plant's normal functions in any way shape or form, neither will they affect you, your children or your pets.

Will NutriFusion Scorch my Lawn?
No, not unless you use too much at once. Never exceed the recommended application rate. Plants don't need huge amounts of fertilizer and they only use what they need. Applying too much will not only risk damaging your lawn – it will waste your money!

Will NutriFusion Harm Wildlife?
Quite the opposite. NutriFusion encourages beneficial the micro and mini-organisms in the soil that in turn feed other animals higher up the food chain.

Can I Use NutriFusion on Other Plants?
Different plants need different balances of plant nutrients, depending on where in the world they first developed and what you want the plant to do for you. For example, sedum plants are adapted to living on really thin soils where there are hardly any nutrients – they don't need much fertilser at all. Tomato plants like lots of food, but too a high nitrogen fertilizer will mean you get loads of leaves and no fruit. NutriFusion has been specially formulated for lawns, it's unlikely to damage other plants but it might not bring you the results you were hoping for.

How Does NutriFusion Compare to Organic Chicken Manure?
NutriFusion contains nothing at all that has been derived from animals so there's no risk of it bringing in any pests or diseases. Chicken Manure can contain quite a high level of ammonia that can unleash some very unpleasant gases that not only smell nasty but that can irritate eyes and airways. Usually, with Chicken Manure you are buying quite a high percentage of sawdust.

How Do I Apply It?
NutriFusion is a granular fertiliser that can comes ready to apply, there's no need to dilute it with water or add any other ingredients. Simply spread it evenly across your lawn, preferably using one of the special fertilizer applicators available from most garden centres.
